Nintendo Wins Lawsuit over Wii Home Console.

Nintendo Wii

Nintendo has won a lawsuit in the United States against Copper Innovations Group, a company that sought to hold the hardware maker accountable for violating one its patents with the Wii home console and its controllers.

David Cercone, a district court judge in Pittsburgh, did not even allow the lawsuit to go to jury trial and dismissed the case because the plaintiff did not bring enough evidence to sustain its accusation.

Richard Medway, who is the deputy general counsel at Nintendo of America, said that the company is ready to defend its devices and its games against patent trolls, companies that seek to profit from the success of others via trivial lawsuit.

What’s worrying is that Nintendo is still defending lawsuits about the Wii in 2012, just as it is ready to introduce its new Wii U home console before the end of the year.

The number of patent lawsuits that Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo need to fight might become crippling in the coming years.
